IELTS ESSAY 2025

A lot of places in the world rely on tourism as a main source of income. Unfortunately, tourism can also be a source of problems if it is not managed correctly. Describe the advantages and disadvantages of tourism in the modern world. Do you think that benefits of tourism outweight its drawbacks?

Tourism plays a vital role in the economies of many places worldwide, serving as a primary source of income. While it brings numerous advantages, mismanagement can lead to significant problems, making it essential to weigh the benefits against the drawbacks.

One of the primary advantages of tourism is economic growth. Tourists spend money on accommodations, food, transportation, and local attractions, contributing to the prosperity of the host community. This influx of funds can stimulate the development of infrastructure, create job opportunities, and enhance the overall standard of living for residents.

Moreover, tourism often fosters cultural exchange. Visitors have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the local culture, traditions, and customs, leading to mutual understanding and appreciation between tourists and residents. This cultural exchange can promote tolerance and broaden perspectives.

However, there are notable disadvantages associated with un-managed tourism. Uncontrolled tourism can lead to environmental degradation. Increased footfall in natural areas can result in habitat destruction, pollution, and pressure on local resources such as water and energy. Improper waste disposal and construction can also harm ecosystems and wildlife.

Most seriously, unregulated tourism can disrupt local cultures and communities. It can lead to the commodification of culture, where traditions are performed solely for tourists, leading to the loss of authentic practices. Notably, if infrastructure is not adequately improvised, it could lead to strain the local infrastructure and services, affecting the quality of life for residents.

Whether the benefits of tourism outweigh its drawbacks depends on effective management and sustainable practices. With proper planning, regulation, and community involvement, the positive economic impact and cultural exchange can be maximized while minimizing environmental and social harm. Striking a balance ensures that tourism becomes a force for positive change rather than a source of problems, ultimately benefiting both the local community and visitors.
