IELTS ESSAY 2025

In the future, there will be higher proportion of older people than young people in many countries. Is it positive or negative development?

Though elderly people are an integral part of a country’s population, it is crucial to acknowledge the potential challenges that a higher population of old people may bring. It is genuinely feared that older population will take over the younger ones in many countries in coming years and I am inclined to believe it will be quite precarious situation and thus be unhealthy growth for the society.

To begin with, since diseases, health issues come uninvited with old age, a higher population of old people can seriously burden healthcare systems. The hospitals, clinics will remain over crowded with ailing people and long waiting times, inadequate resources, and overburdened medical staff will have to compromise with their sincere services. For example, researchers instead of making new inventions, finding new cures and remedies will be busy giving life support to the aged people lying on their hospitals beds.

Another perturbing concern is that an aging population can lead to an imbalance in the labor market. As more old people approach retirement age, there may be a shortage of skilled workers in various sectors. This shortage can hinder economic growth and development by restricting the availability of experienced professionals.

Additionally, a higher population of old people can create heavier economic burden on government sector. A great proportion of government’s treasury will be consumed allocating monthly pensions, medical insurances charges or other retirement benefits. The graph of tax payees will have such a slump that younger individuals will have to face challenges for their economic well-being.

In conclusion, the increasing population of old people is seen as a negative development in society. The rationale behind this viewpoint is that it places additional strain on healthcare systems, leads to an imbalance in the labor market, and results in harder economic burden where younger generation will have to go extra miles for their financial fitness.
