Many people believe that zoos are important. What are the advantages and disadvantages of keeping animals in a zoo? Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?
Zoo is a zoological garden where animals are kept. Some concerned groups feel that a zoo plays a crucial role for animals. Zoos have both pros and cons which I am going to discuss in upcoming paragraphs.
To begin with the merits, zoos are essential for the preservation and cultivation of endangered species. There are countless animals ranging from various big cats like lions, tigers, leopards, pandas, and many more that are hunted by hunters and thus they depend on zoos for protection. These animals have been driven to the brink of extinction either by loss of habitat. Responsible zoos are tasked with breeding them in order to stabilise falling populations and then re-introducing them into the wild. Without these zoos, many species would have already gone extinct. For example, golden wild money is still there as a rare specie only because of its conservation in the zoos.
Alternatively there are some downside of zoos too. A lion remain safe in their natural habitat, roams over miles of grassland, hunts for meals and competes with rival prides. This is how lions have lived for thousands of years and is the natural byproduct of a generational process of evolution. The same lion placed in a zoo paces a small cage, is made to eat dead meat The evidence for zoos as a cruel institution lies in the contrasting of a natural and unnatural lifestyle and turning proud beasts into scavengers.
In conclusion, zoos are fundamentally artificial but also a net positive because of their conservation efforts. Thus it can be concluded that a zoo has more advantages than its disadvantages.
