Juvenile crime rates are skyrocketing in today’s society. There is a suggestion that authorities should punish young criminals in the same manner as adults. I agree with this statement to a certain extent.
To begin with, it is argued that young criminals should face the same punishments because it would serve as a deterrent for other potential offenders. If young offenders are punished appropriately, it sends a clear message to others considering similar actions about the severe consequences they could face. This could significantly reduce crime rates among young people, as the awareness of harsh punishments might deter them from engaging in criminal activities.
Furthermore, if young criminals are not adequately punished, it could encourage other children to commit crimes. They might develop the notion that they can escape accountability regardless of the severity of their actions. For example, in South Korea, where individuals under twelve are not punished even for serious crimes like murder, there has been a disturbing increase in juvenile crime rates.
On the other hand, I believe that punishing young offenders to the same extent as adults is not always appropriate. Various factors can trigger young individuals to commit crimes, such as acting impulsively out of emotions like anger or sadness. Instead of having malicious intentions, their actions might simply be mistaken. Additionally, severe punishments can have long-lasting psychological effects on young offenders, causing them to feel ashamed and scarred for life.
In conclusion, while it is important to address juvenile crime seriously, young offenders should not always be punished the same way as adults. They lack the maturity of adults and might act impulsively. It is crucial to provide them with opportunities for rehabilitation and self-improvement instead of subjecting them to severe punishments.
