IELTS ESSAY 2025

Task 2. Some people think that social networking sites have a huge negative impact on both individuals and society. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Social networking sites have gained great popularity with the advent of internet technology. It has undeniably raised concerns about their bad effects on people and society. I find the concern worth considering but at the same time I reserve my views on the issue too.

On one hand, these platforms can have harmful effects. If people spend too much time on social media, they may get addicted. This can hurt their mental health, causing anxiety, depression, or low self-esteem, especially when they compare themselves to others online. Also, spending too much time online reduces face-to-face communication, which weakens real-life relationships. For society, social media spreads fake news, cyber bullying, and negative content, which can cause divisions, especially in political discussions.

However, it’s not fair to say that social media is only harmful. These platforms help people connect globally, allowing communication across long distances and helping people stay in touch or find support. Many people use social media to show their skills or find jobs, which helps improve their careers. On a larger scale, social media helps raise awareness about important issues and unite people during crises.

In conclusion, while social media does come with risks, it also provides many benefits. If people use it wisely and if better rules are made to stop the spread of fake news and cyber bullying, the good aspects of social media could outweigh the bad ones. Thus, its impact is mixed, rather than completely negative.
