Task 2: Advances in technology and automation have reduced the need for manual labour. Therefore, working hours should be reduced. To what extent do you agree?
The rapid growth of technology and automation has greatly changed today’s workplaces. Many repetitive and tiring tasks are now managed by machines, which raises the question of whether working hours should be reduced. I agree that working hours should be shorter, not only because of higher efficiency but also for social, mental, and environmental reasons.
Firstly, if people work fewer hours, they can use their free time to learn, explore, and think creatively. Since machines cannot replace human imagination, shorter hours can help employees stay motivated and innovative. When workers are relaxed, they are likely to bring fresh and original ideas that benefit both themselves and their organisations.
Secondly, having been surrounded by digital tools all day, many employees face mental fatigue even if machines do most of the physical work. They are constantly expected to check data, monitor systems, and make instant decisions. If working hours were reduced, employees could rest and recover, which would improve their focus and productivity instead of leading to burnout.
Furthermore, reduced working hours can also help the environment. When offices, factories, and transport systems run for fewer hours, less electricity and fuel are used, which means less pollution and lower carbon emissions. Thus, it supports both personal well-being and environmental balance.
In conclusion, when technology has already made work faster and easier, continuing with long working hours makes little sense. Reducing them is a smart and necessary step, as it encourages creativity, protects mental health, and supports a cleaner, sustainable world.
