task 2 essay

Students’ Attempt 16

Young people committing crimes should be treated the same as adults by the authorities. To what extend do you agree or disagree?

Juvenile crimes are on a rocket rise in today’s date. There is a suggestion that authorities should punish young criminals the same way that they do with the grownups. I agree with the statement to a certain extent.

To commence with, it is suggested that young criminals should be punished the same way because it will set down an example for other potential criminals. If the young offender is punished fairly, the others thinking of doing the same will be made aware of the severe consequences. This can reduce the crime rates among younger people drastically provided that the potential offender knows the harsh punishment they can be granted with.

In addition to this, if these young criminals are not punished accordingly and properly, the other children can get motivated to commit crimes. It can set down a notion in their minds that no matter what crime they commit, they are not going to be held accountable for it. To exemplify, in South Korea where the criminals below twelve are not punished even for heinous crimes like murder, the juvenile crimes is seen multiplying at an alarming pace.

Alternatively, I believe that punishing them to the same degree may not always be right. There are some things that can trigger the young ones to commit a crime. For instance, he could do an inappreciable deed in a spur of emotions like anger or sadness. Instead of having a bad intention, it could simply be a mistake. Furthermore, a severe punishment can also scare the young one for life. It could make him feel ashamed of himself for the rest of his life.

To sum up, I believe that though teenagers commit crimes, they should not be punished the same way as adults as they are not mature enough and could have done it in a spur of emotions. Instead some chances should be given to them so them so they can improve themselves.
